HIPPOLYTA: The Queen of the Amazons and Theseus’ fiancé, she is both a fearsome warrior and empathetic woman.
HERMIA: Egeus’ daughter and the object of both Lysander and Demetrius’ affection. She is strong-willed and believes that she should have the right to choose her own husband.
LYSANDER: Athenian nobleman who loves Hermia. He risks Athenian law to run away and elope with her.
HELENA: Loves Demetrius, who at one time returned her love but who now is in love with Hermia.
DEMETRIUS: Athenian nobleman who loves Hermia but is pursued by Helena.
PUCK: Oberon’s mischievous and faithful servant. Enjoys nothing more than playing tricks and causing trouble.
OBERON: The King of the Fairies. He is willful and demands obedience from all, including Titania.
TITANIA: The Queen of the Fairies. She is independent, refusing to give in to Oberon’s demands.
QUINCE: A carpenter and the director of the production of Pyramus and Thisbe.
BOTTOM: A weaver who is supremely confident in his own skills as an actor. He is given the leading role in the play, “Pyramus and Thisbe,” even though he is in fact a seriously incompetent actor.
FLUTE: A bellows-mender who plays the role of Thisbe in Pyramus and Thisbe.
STARVELING: A tailor who portrays Moonshine in Pyramus and Thisbe.
SNOUT: A tinker who plays the part of Wall in Pyramus and Thisbe.
SNUG: A joiner who plays the role of the Lion in Pyramus and Thisbe.
EGEUS: Hermia’s father. He is overbearing and controlling, demanding that Hermia marry the man of his choosing.
PHILOSTRATE: Theseus’ Master of Revels who is charged with arranging the entertainment for the Duke’s wedding.
